Gabbin about... my creative slog.
A word count non-update and how I'm climbing out of my energy slump.
11.10.24
I need a defibrillator. No, not because I have an actual heart condition. But because I feel like I need something to jolt me back to the place I was a month ago.
September was such a monumental month of progress for me and October was its exact opposite. We had a major life event, followed by illness, followed by hosting family in town. Not quite an apples to apples comparison but I have to think this is what Austin Powers felt when he lost his mojo.
How’s the vampire novel going?
While I had publicly declared that I was going to attempt NaNoWriMo, I’ve fallen QUITE short of my word count goals. Again, derailed by both personal and cultural events, I just have not had the mental space or energy left to create.
But I keep showing up. I’ve attended the SmutU writing sprints with my fellow group of writers but have been too distracted to get into a creative flow state. Despite succumbing to daily doomscrolling, I’ve (apparently) managed to write a bit. Which just goes to show that a little bit each day can add up!
Scrivener (my writing program) says I’ve written 3,814 words so far this month which surpasses my word count in October so THAT is a WIN.
What I’ve lacked in word count, I’ve made up for in story plotting. I’m so appreciative for the community of writers that makes space for me to talk through my creative process and struggles.
Special shout to fellow Minnesota-based aspiring author, Amber, who met up with me for lunch this week and helped me work out the kinks on some of my plot points. The story will be 50x stronger thanks to her input! Everyone clap for Amber 👏
That’s really all for now. To sum up the last week of writing — and life in general — I’m doing my absolute best with the energy I’ve got. I’m confident this upcoming week will be better.
What I’m consuming: a recent binge for your consideration!
I only have a show recommendation this week. I’m on the 2nd half of two LARGE fantasy books and I’m hoping to finish one or both by the end of the month. Stay tuned on a book recco.
Okay, so what’s the show?
I’m not one to typically hop on a show recommendation that only has one season. I was hours and hours of episodes to get lost in. But I couldn’t be happier that I made an exception for Nobody Wants This on Netflix. I cannot stress enough how much I loved this show. 10/10!
The show is praised for telling the story of two emotionally mature adults who communicate respectfully with each other as well as set and respect each other’s boundaries. It’s a breath of fresh air and even if I weren’t already a serial show rewatcher, I would rewatch this one. Let’s be honest, I’ll probably watch it this week..I need the dopamine.
And it was recently confirmed that the show was renewed for a second season! #Yay!
So, wait. You launched your business?
I did! And I haven’t posted a ton about it yet but I plan to ramp up in the coming week. If you or someone you know is curious about revamping your LinkedIn profile, building a consistent and effective social media presence, or long-term social media strategic coaching, you can now book time with me through my website!
What’s on deck?
I’m hoping to shake loose some of my stuck energy and start making strides on my projects. This week I will:
Write 5,000 words
Book 3 business appointments
Read 20 pages a day
Move my body at least 30 minutes each day
And that feels like enough.
Until next week,
Gabs
